The search for clean energy is urgent, expensive and sure to cause a heated debate if you bring it up at a cocktail party. Cow manure is smelly, abundant and sure to make people shake their heads if you bring it up at a cocktail party.
One company that has developed a creative way to deal with both of these is Pacific Gas & Electric. PG & E’s ClimateSmart program uses methane captured from the waste of dairy cows. Methane is a greenhouse gas worse than carbon dioxide and cows produce a lot of it. PG & E believes their progam will result in a 75,000 metric tons reduction in verifiable greenhouse gas emissions.
